Postnatal Lactation Consultations

How do you know if you need a private consultation with a lactation consultant?

There are many reasons why a lactation consultation is needed. If you feel you need help, guidance, reassurance, or a detailed care plan, then scheduling a consultation is the right thing to do for your family.

Issues that require a lactation consult:

• Sore or cracked nipples
• Plugged duct(s)
• Fussy baby while nursing
• Difficulties latching baby to breast
• Baby not gaining weight
• Milk supply issues
• Sleepy baby not nursing well
• Swollen or engorged breasts
• Painful breasts while nursing
• Nipples itch or burn
• Baby will only nurse on one side
• Going back to work & pumping
• Baby only nurses for a few minutes
• Baby won't stop crying after nursing

All consultations include the following:

• Mother/Infant Health History
• Infant's tongue and suck evaluation
• Pre/Post Feeding Weights
• Maternal Breast Exam
• Breastfeeding Evaluation
• Breastfeeding Care Plan
• Report Sent To Primary Care Physician(s)
• A Follow Up Email or Phone Call 

In Home (Postnatal) Lactation Consultation

A lactation consultant will come to your home and provide a thorough evaluation of your breastfeeding session, gather pre/post feeding weights, evaluate oral function of your baby, discuss your goals, write up a care plan that you understand and feel comfortable following, correspond with your primary care physician(s), and offer email support for 10 days.

Home Consultation (2hrs) - $200

• Twins add $25 to consultation fees
• Follow up visit (90 min) - $150

Prenatal Lactation Consultations

Prenatal lactation consultations take place in the comfort of your own home. The best time to have a prenatal appointment is 2-4 weeks before your due date. During the appointment your medical history will be gathered and reviewed and any concerns you might have will be addressed. Breastfeeding basics such as positioning, latch, feeding frequency/duration, typical newborn behaviors, and ways to achieve the best start to your breastfeeding journey immediately after giving birth will also be discussed.  This is also a great time to discuss past breastfeeding problems and/or health issues that may cause difficulties with breastfeeding.  A physical breast exam will be done to rule out any anatomical issues that may interfere with a smooth breastfeeding experience.

In Home (Prenatal) Consultation (60-90 min) - $150

Lactation Package Discount ($295)  

• 90 min Prenatal Consultation
• 2 hr Postnatal Consultation 
• Full payment required at initial visit
• Postnatal Consultation must be concluded within 7 days of delivery​

Most insurance companies provide coverage for lactation consultations.  If you are not an Aetna subscriber, at the end of your appointment, you will be provided with all the necessary paperwork needed to submit a claim to your insurance company to request reimbursement. Breastfeeding Consultants of San Diego, LLC does not guarantee your insurance company will reimburse some or all of your payment as all insurance carriers/plans are different.
