Postnatal Lactation Consultations

How do you know if you need a private consultation with a lactation consultant?

There are many reasons why a lactation consultation is needed. If you feel you need help, guidance, reassurance, or a detailed care plan, then scheduling a consultation is the right thing to do for your family.

Issues that require a lactation consult:

• Sore or cracked nipples
• Plugged duct(s)
• Fussy baby while nursing
• Difficulties latching baby to breast
• Baby not gaining weight
• Milk supply issues
• Sleepy baby not nursing well
• Swollen or engorged breasts
• Painful breasts while nursing
• Nipples itch or burn
• Baby will only nurse on one side
• Going back to work & pumping
• Baby only nurses for a few minutes
• Baby won't stop crying after nursing

All consultations include the following:

• Mother/Infant Health History
• Evaluation of infant's oral function
• Pre/Post Feeding Weights
• Maternal Breast Exam
• Breastfeeding Evaluation
• Breastfeeding Care Plan
• Report Sent To Primary Care Physician(s)
• A Follow Up Email or Phone Call 

Postnatal Lactation Consultation

A thorough evaluation will be provided along with gathering pre/post feeding weights, evaluation of the oral function of your baby, we will work on problem areas, and discuss your goals. A care plan will be provided that is easy to follow and email support is provided for 10 days.

Private Home Consultation (non insurance) (2hrs) - $225

• Twins add $50 to consultation fees
• Follow up home visit (60-90 min) - $175

Office Consultation (non insurance) (75 min) - $175

• Mondays and Fridays only
• Centrally located in Mission Valley
• Follow up office visit (50 - 60 min) - $125

Prenatal Lactation Consultations

Prenatal lactation consultations take place in the comfort of your own home or in office. The best time to have a prenatal appointment is 3-4 weeks before your due date. During the appointment your medical history will be gathered and reviewed and any concerns you might have will be addressed. Breastfeeding basics such as positioning, latch, feeding frequency/duration, typical newborn behaviors, and ways to achieve the best start to your breastfeeding journey will also be discussed.  This is also a great time to discuss past issues that may caused difficulties with breastfeeding.  A physical breast exam will be done to rule out any anatomical issues that may interfere with a smooth breastfeeding experience.

In Home (Prenatal) Consultation (non insurance) (2 hrs) - $200

Most insurance companies provide coverage for lactation consultations. We take Aetna PPO/POS plans and are also contracted with The Lactation Network (United and Blue Cross, Blue Shield) and Wildflower Health (Cigna). If you do not have Aetna, please click the button below to find out if you have 100% coverage to see us! If your insurance plan is not within our network a Super Bill can be provided by request to use for insurance submission purposes.
